Chronic diseases are winnable with winner’s attitude

When faced with Frustrating Chronic Ailments like Stroke Paralysis, Alzheimer’s and Multiple Scleroses we need tones of elixir called WILLPOWER; extraordinary powers of mind are required for generating this invincible willpower. There are numerous examples of extraordinary people accomplishing the “impossible”, deliberately getting involved in risky adventures. Let’s ask a mountaineer on way to conquering Mount Everest, a jet pilot performing aerobatics in a world competition, a runner in New York City marathon, a boxer, a 100 meter runner during Olympics. During such exceptional ventures did he/she ever thought about teasingly negative memories of the past; why was I laid off during a pandemic, why was I jilted so many times in my life, why I couldn’t do well in my business, why do I always get the worst boss in the world. WHY ME, WHY ME, WHY ME 😢
When faced with challenges like chronic ailments we ardently need intangible strengths but we often tend to lose spirits, totally jeopardizing this strong panacea called WILLPOWER. Unfortunately we are mostly wailing, whining and weeping remembering most hurting memories of the past, lost battle of life, which could easily be won. If we could learn and embrace this puissance of Winner’s Attitude from these heroes, we can also harness the infinite powers of mind and WILLPOWER, making life invigorating and stimulating like a brave adventurer on a TIGHT ROPE, but this approach requires us to take life more of an adventure and an excursion. We must not forget we too are on a mission, no less than surmounting Mount Everest, performing a demanding maneuver like roll on the top in a jet, running New York City marathon, or in the boxing ring against our doctor!! 🙃 Let’s not forget that going through a Frustrating ailment with smile is no less than surmounting Everest. Some of us withstanding strains and lacerations of Chronic Ailments might themselves be a hero in the past like famous boxer Muhammad Ali, who fought with Alzheimer’s for almost 4 decades.

Remember the one on way to Mt. Everest, one in the cockpit of F 16 and the one running NYC marathon; all these daring people don’t have word FEAR in their dictionaries, these people are beyond feelings of any fear, even far beyond the fear of death which is the biggest hurdle if conquered nothing remains a barrier to a life full of self-assurance and contentment.

“A man who fears is
already suffering
from what he
fears.”

Michel de Montaigne

We must know that when we are faced with chronic ailments, cruel test and trial is not the ailment but the gruesome effect such ailments have on our behavior, especially in brain related maladies, reason is the close relationship between the brain (the hardware) and mind (the software).
Brain stroke perhaps is worst because in few seconds this trauma brings a frightful halt not only in life of the victim but the whole world seem to come to a full stop, with no time for mental preparation at all. Fear of crippling disabilities have serious effects on one’s life, behavior and habits, making the survivors a EASY PREY to all kinds of mental problems even serious Pseudobulbar Affect (PBA) a neurological condition also known as emotional liability, reflex crying and involuntary emotional expression disorder, among others.

……The primary sign of pseudobulbar affect (PBA) is frequent, involuntary and uncontrollable outbursts of crying or laughing that are exaggerated or not connected to your emotional state. Laughter often turns to tears. Your mood will appear normal between episodes, which can occur at any time. Crying appears to be a more common sign of PBA than laughing……..

BUT let’s not forget today we are here to challenge the medical science and look for ways to convert all weaknesses into strength, disabilities and handicap into special abilities, making ways to safely go through this marathon of recovery from paralysis, embracing this Winner’s Attitude.

WILLPOWER IS AN ATTITUDE

I feel I am lucky to have attended multifarious institutions including schools from very remote areas of Pakistan to the prestigious institutions like Government College University of Lahore, Pakistan Military Academy from where I luckily graduated at a 2nd position missing the sword of honor only by one position. I did my basic Helicopter Conversion from Bell Helicopter International in Isfahan, Iran and an Instrument Rating from Fort Rucker Alabama. After being a flight instructor for about 10 years I got early retirement and since then I am teaching Religious Studies and Islamiyat to O & A Levels. A profession I feel has given me great sense of achievement besides so many good people as my beloved students who are like a family now, which I take as an asset to me. 31 Jan 2019 had a brain stroke, this challenge has given me now a unique purpose in my life, to be a source of benefit for all & help everyone in Recovery from all agonies even paralysis. This humble effort has been a big source of HOPE for me as I take hope to be; (H) helping (O) other (P) people (E) evolve
